Along unoccupied sands they walk, slow and silent, watching the night's breakers roll in and back out. An errant wave slides all the way up the shore, kissing Sean's bare foot before he can move to avoid its sting. He jumps anyway.

"Sean? D'you want to talk about i--"
"Hey, mid-summer here, right? Shouldn't the fireflies be out now?"
"New Zealand doesn't have them. The only place on Earth, in fact," Viggo says softly. His fingers come to rest on the upper curve of Sean's spine. "I told you this place was special."
