There was one battered and travel-stained book amidst Boromir’s belongings, pages worn from many years of reading.
The handwriting was atrocious, spelling worse, but juvenile enthusiasm shone from every page.
‘He has always been my role-model, my whole reason for being a soldier. To fight like him, to win honour and glory for Gondor – that is ever my aim. Father would kill me if he found out that I’d copied the stories. He hates him for some reason.’
‘Mmmm….’
‘I wonder what happened to him at the end?’ Boromir mused as he poked at the dying fire.
On the final page a rough sketch showed a mighty warrior brandishing a great sword, crookedly labelled Thorongil – My Hero!.
‘I wonder’ murmured Aragorn uneasily, biting at a ragged fingernail.
