Aragorn stilled, one hand clutching the balustrade, bare toes curled into the trellis, and bowed his head, willed his heart to beat quieter. Above him the murmur from the bed ceased and he waited, motionless, muscles protesting the awkward hold...the perfume of roses wreathing about his head.
He sucked in a breath in preparation to move, noiselessly, upward. Perhaps he was old for such foolishness. His love might protest on waking but smile unbidden, and kiss fiercely and that was all his reward. The first caress of a golden dawn warmed his back and Aragorn pulled himself onto the balcony.
