Standing by the window, Viggo watches the snow fall. Unique they are, snowflakes, he muses, just like Sean, just like me. But when they join together, silently, wondrously, they merge into something breathtaking.

The Christmas tree lights reflected in the window blank out as Sean comes to stand behind him, wrapping his arms around in warmth. Viggo leans back against him, solid and comforting.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Sean asks.

Viggo takes a deep breath, turning in Sean’s arms, letting the curtains drop behind him.

“Just thinking about your Christmas gift. Wondering if it’ll please you. What to do if it doesn’t”.

Sean smiles. “How can you even think that, Viggo? How long have we known each other? You know me better than I know myself. But . . . just in case I really don’t like it, there are ways you could make it up to me”.

“Such as?”

“Well, let’s just say you’ll be on your knees . . .” says Sean with a wink.

On Christmas morning, Sean holds his gift from Viggo – a small, carved wooden box with an ornate key in the lock. It feels heavy, but the treasure revealed inside is only a drawing. Oh, but what a drawing! He certainly never posed for it, so he gathers there must have been a photograph for inspiration.

They seem to be at some sort of party, the table’s littered with empty glasses and thrown streamers and the lighting’s dim. The other people at the table have left, and he and Viggo are sitting across from one another. Viggo’s attention is momentarily drawn away, but Sean is gazing, gazing, gazing at Viggo; green eyes intense, tongue just catching the edge of his lip. His face is rapt, yet utterly at peace, love glowing, burning across that small table. A single moment in time, captured for ever by Viggo’s skill.

Sean looks up, speechless, those same eyes passionate but gleaming with the edge of tears.

“I . . .” he begins, swallows, tries again. “It’s . . .”

Viggo sighs.

“. . . almost perfect”.

Viggo sighs again. “Almost?”

“Well, the knees thing would make it absolutely perfect. Merry Christmas, Viggo”.
